An array of spectator sports are on offer to audiences across the whole Ruhr metropolis. The sport that draws the most spectators is by far soccer with three major teams in Bochum, Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen.
Other sports that can be viewed indoors include handball, basketball and ice hockey. Horse racing attracts punters mostly during the summer months to Dortmund and Mülheim.

People here love the sport of football and are ruthless in their passion. Two of the traditionally most successful clubs are Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04. Yet fans and spectators teem in their thousands every week to watch and cheer on many other teams in the league tables too.
The Germans are highly enthusiastic about handball, with the game defined by many expletives. Globally, the Deutsche Handballbund claims to be the largest organisation of its kind and the Handball-Bundesliga the strongest league. Several teams play in the Greater Ruhr region too.
Within the Ruhr region several local team games are regularly played with one league team in Hagen revealing a long track record within the national league. Basketball games in Germany are organised under the league Basketball Bundesliga Beko BBL with some eighteen teams.
