The department store landscape in Germany once offered a varied and lively mix of different brands. However sad facades and the lack of investment indoors led to a slow but sure decline in popularity.
Consumer tastes changed leaving all but two major chains behind. They are Karstadt and Kaufhof. Following even more restructuring and closure of stores, the market place is stabilising a little and shoppers have returned again to this once magnificent idea. Modernisation has helped.
Department stores can be found in most malls and on many high streets.
