The Ruhrtal Radweg (Ruhr valley cycling route) stretches almost 150 miles from Duisburg in the west across relatively flat terrain to the last twenty odd miles of undulating hills to Winterberg in the east. That’s 230 kilometres of cycling with a difference.
Whilst Winterberg is high enough to offer skiing during the winter, the town of Duisburg is famous for Europe’s largest inland harbour. The commercial activities here are flanked by an exciting recreational space with many bistros and restaurants offering relaxing terraces for sunny days. In between, the river valley reveals beautiful vistas and plenty more to see.
Duisburg, Oberhausen, Mülheim, Essen, Hattingen, Bochum, Witten, Wetter, Herdecke, Hagen, Dortmund, Schwerte, Iserlohn, Holzwickede, Fröndenberg, Menden, Wickede, Ense, Arnsberg, Meschede, Bestwig, Olsberg, Winterberg; fascinating place names along the route for those who wish to practice pronunciation.
Visitors wishing to spend a night or two along the way can find a large variety of accommodation from hotels, guesthouses and B&B to caravan and camping sites.
