It has been said that Germans are not necessarily early adopters, yet when they do, then with a vengeance. This is true for coffee culture too.

That infamous and somewhat bitter German dripped brew used to be served across the Rhine Ruhr region in traditional coffee houses. Nowadays many cafés with famous names have disappeared while others have reinvented themselves and diminishing. Not quite the prefererence of southern Europeans for a quick espresso, residents do however, more often than not, choose a cafe latte or cappuccino.

Local and international brands such as Stabucks and Woyton ofer their systems. However, more unique, individual cafés have sprouted almost everywhere. Most local cafés brew superb latte, nearly all of which prepare to go or take away as well.

This writer always searches for establishments using a powerful machine with metal spouts and filters. And a friendly barista.
