Opened during the 2010 European Capitals of Culture, RUHR.2010, the Dortmunder U shows artworks from 20th and 21st centuries, develops innovative concepts of cultural education in the digital age an initiates partnerships between art and science.

Museum Folkwang opened January 2010 when Essen and the Ruhr Area became one of Europe’s Capitals of Culture for that year. The collections of the museum are as varied as they are vast; paintings, sculptures and objects, photographs, graphics and posters.

For the first time, an exhibition is showing the wonders of nature and culture together as equally significant creations of our planet. “Magic Places” points to the unique monuments in which the history of our Earth comes to life in all its wonderful variety.

Zollverein is an enormous old mining complex in the north of Essen and is the most prominent example of the structural change in the whole Ruhr region. An impressive mix of historical design and industrial museums and leisure facilities await visitors.
