The major rail operator in Germany remains state owned Deutsche Bahn. The massive company has focussed efforts on their fast network known as the ICE. Modern, fast, lucrative and normally more punctual than the rest, these trains also weave their way through Rhine Ruhr. Eurocity and Intercity trains complement the service.
Major axes run from Dortmund to Bonn either through Bochum, Essen, Duisburg Mülheim, Düsseldorf and Cologne or via Wuppertal to then speed up and connect with national and international networks.
Local trains (Regionalbahn) pack in passengers like sardines in all directions to most destinations across Rhine Ruhr. Most tickets in the Verkehrsverband Rhein Ruhr and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg regions are valid on these trains.
Both the local media and passengers regularly trash quality and punctuality standards. Smaller private competitors on several routes tend to be more popular.
