Planning ahead for queues, road works and hold-ups

Written by Garry on

The motorway (autobahn) infrastructure across the Rhine Ruhr region is extremely dense and use of the complete road system is heavy at many times of the day. Three motorways run west to east through the Ruhr Metropolis. Three also run parallel to each other from Düsseldorf to Cologne in the south then beyond towards Bonn.

German drivers tend to drive very close, fast and not to look so far ahead as motorists in some other countries. Roads are safe though, horns are used by some but road rage is minimal. Rainy days especially can cause chaos not only during rush hours, Mondays and trade fair days create tailbacks that can be many kilometres long.

The state transport ministry has an excellent traffic system that reveals current traffic conditions and predicts the situation ahead of time. Snarl-ups can be seen before setting off. In English and easy to use.
