Street parking across the whole of the Rhine Ruhr region brings with it a plethora of signs. Interpreting the rules can be very confusing though with many areas regulated in multiple ways. Some areas have resident parking at certain hours, some parking spaces are free at all hours, others timed with a disk and yet more are metered. Mobile payment facilities are available.

In contrast to France and Italy, the Germans treat their cars well, clean them regularly and often detest minor scratches and dents. If a mishap occurs beware departing it is an offence carrying a hefty penalty and dire consequences.

Covered parking is available below ground or above, from modern and light buildings to old, dark and scruffy places. Most have the obligatory tight ramps and narrow parking bays.

Most local city authorities provide good signage declaring available space to aid parking in their central districts.
