Many urban centres in Rhine Ruhr

The polycentric metropolitan region of Rhine Ruhr encompasses numerous urban developments. Located in the midst of the European urbanised zone of the blue banana, the area is one of the strongest in the federal republic of Germany.

In the Ruhr Metropolis, urban sprawl brings together such places as Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, Mülheim, Oberhausen and Recklinghausen, which form the backbone with some five million residents. Adding to that the towns and cities of the Rhine such as Düsseldorf, Bonn, Leverkusen and Cologne brings the number of residents to eleven million.

Fortunes of these places vary enormously depending upon their general source of wealth, ongoing development and restructuring and political leadership, fortunes vary enormously.

Many places offer a lively urban feel and diverse atmospheres worthwhile experiencing.


Located on the banks of the Rhine, Bonn prides itself as one of Germany's most international locations. Friendly residents offer foreign employees and visitors to conventions and conferences an ideal environment to feel at home. The city exudes a young and vibrant flair.

Bonn Business

International recognition arrived when Bonn became the capital of West Germany. Reunification changed the face of Bonn again forever, allowing the city to diversify. A wide variety of NGOs and large national corporations have helped change the local profile in more recent years.

Spread across the whole of the Rhine Ruhr region is an extremely diverse collection of museums. Locations are sometimes striking, architecture often impressive and from quirky niche projects to state funded and well established institutions, topics are as varied as their visitors.

A large area within the state of North Rhine Westphalia, the area offers tourists much to see. Vast swathes of hills and forests, several rivers such as the Ruhr and the Rhine, impressive cities and very friendly people await visitors from across the globe.

Several locations in the Rhine Ruhr region possess excellent infrastructure to host large events. Since numerous trade fairs represent the leading and world number one fairs in their field, a massive influx of visitors regularly changes the face of the host city.

Art venues can be found in downtown locations of many cities in all corners of the Rhine Ruhr region. Patronage and public subsidies are high, enabling many fine examples of impressive collections and inspiring exhibitions from large to small. Most can be visited throughout the year.
