Germany is famous for staging fabulous, romantic Christmas markets and the Rhine Ruhr region is no exception. Expats especially enjoy a day or two in the region taking in the scents of roasted almonds (Mandeln) and mulled wine (Glühwein) at one of the variety of Christmas markets.

Perfect examples large and small can be found in many cities such as Bonn, Cologne, Essen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf or Neuss. Oberhausen is known for its Christmas woods while Dortmund attracts with an enormous Christmas tree. Visitors can experience how friendly the locals are and join in the festivities. Joyous folk speak surprisingly good English, perhaps with their tongues loosened by the mulled wine.

Shop for Christmas presents in one of Europe’s largest malls in Oberhausen, on the stunning retail haven of Düsseldorf’s Königsallee or in the vibrant town centre of Cologne. Surprisingly low prices are offered on many consumer goods and fashion brands abound.

Take in the unique Zeche Zollverein and Red Dot Design Museum with its largest exhibition of contemporary design in the World. Or perhaps inspiring Folkwang Museum, K20 and K21 or one of many other art venues and museums.
