In the Rhine Ruhr region and Germany as a whole, the dubbing of foreign series, soaps, thrillers and movies on television is widespread. Programmes are very seldom shown in original English, American, French or any other language with or without subtitles. The concept of dual channel language choice such as in Spain or original language with subtitles as in Nordic counties and the Netherlands does not exist.
In Germany and such countries as France, Spain and Italy the business of translating and dubbing into the local, say German language is huge. Some say to the disadvantage to the young, pointing to the language capabilities of Nordic nationalities.
Things are changing but streaming of foreign TV prorgrammes is still often limited due to licensing issues, which leaves just a few channels such as CNN and BBC World available on cable or satellite. Depending upon the temporary expat home, one or the other should already be installed in the house or flat.
Many expats say it is possible to trick the system and install freeview and similar systems imported from abroad. A Google search reveals more. Others may enjoy the opportunity to get a feel for the phonetics of German and free help in learning the language.
