Smartphones and mobile phones have naturally taken over the lives expats and locals in Germany as much as anywhere.The mobile infrastructure across the Rhine Ruhr region from urban areas to the countryside is on the whole fairly well developed too.
The two largest companies are Vodafone and Telekom, with E-Plus and O2 vying for third and fourth place. Low cost competition and subsidiaries of the big players has been on the rise for some time.
Most long term deals include the subsidised purchase of a phone, smartphone or tablet and normally include a lengthy commitment of twenty-four months. Prepaid or pay as you go contracts are also available. A few providers such as Lebara and Lyca are specialised in international (foreign) phone calls from Germany, which is often good for expats who don’t wish to commit.
