The landscape of educational institutions in Dusseldorf reveals a wide spectrum of universities and academies. Mathematical, technical, natural or philosophical sciences, cultural and social studies as well as musical and arts education all constitute academic life in the state capital.

Studying in Germany had continued to be free for students for decades, which is rare in comparison with many other countries. In more recent years, some federal states began to implement tuition fees, so too several universities in Dusseldorf. The surprisingly low sum of 500 Euros per semester was highly disputed and became a political issue. At the time of writing the government in NRW has cancelled charges.

Numerous foreigners study in Düsseldorf. Prospective international students are advised to enquire about terms when researching registration.
