Of course the fire brigade or fire department (Feuerwehr) runs a 24 hour emergency response service each and every day for the whole of Düsseldorf. Besides domestic properties, they are responsible for any crisis in the vast regions of the industry parks, business districts and retail outlets. Response vehicles are located in many areas of the city.
The number to call in the case of a fire and related emergency is 112. Calls are free and possible from any phone. When reporting, the Feuerwehr advises callers to offer up four important “W’s”
- Where is the emergency or accident?
- What has happened?
- What is the number of hurt or affected people?
- What kind of injuries are evident on the people concerned?
They also suggest waiting on the phone for specific clarification from the rescue centre. Usually emergency calls are answered in German but normally there should be at least one person who speaks English.
