Beijing’s recent popularity is likely due to a combination of the country’s staggering economic development and its role as host city of the 2008 Olympics. What makes the Beijing experience uniquely special however, is bearing witness to this great development set against an incredibly rich cultural fabric and a history stretching back 300,000 – 500,000 years.

Modern buildings conceal traditional courtyards tucked away in small hutongs, people practicing tai chi in the parks, ancient architectural treasures that have seen the rise and fall of many a dynasty and exquisite yellow-tiled temples whose prayer flags and wind chimes move in the breeze created by passing traffic.
